Thinking about a trip to China, or just want to learn a bit about what it's like there? Join staff from Sen Lin Hu, our Chinese Language Village, for cultural insights and travel advice! In this workshop, you can: Learn communication tips such as slang, jargon, and gestures to help you get by day-to-day, even as a Chinese novice; know where to go, where to eat, and where to buy items you need during your trip; and gain valuable perspectives on cultural norms to help you fully experience all that China has to offer! This session will be conducted in English.

Are you planning a trip to Japan? Or do you interact with Japanese speakers through school, work, or around your neighborhood and want to be able to greet them and exchange some basic phrases in Japanese? Or just want an easy and welcoming introduction to a new language? Take part in our "Survival Japanese" workshop to learn some basic greetings, words, and phrases!

Where is the “Arab world”? What defines it? This workshop, led by staff from Al-Waha, the Arabic Language program at Concordia Language Villages, will give a basic overview of what we mean when we talk about the Arab world - its geography, history, and culture - and recommend resources for further learning and exploration. This workshop will be led by Lucy Lulua Thiboutot, dean of Al-Waha, Concordia's Arabic Language Village. Lulua has an M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University. She taught pre-K at the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon for two years and attended the CASA program in Damascus, Syria, studying Arabic intensively. In the United States, she has taught Arabic in New England private schools, public schools in rural Pennsylvania and in STARTALK high school summer programs in Boston. Since 2013, she has edited the Arabic Educator Bulletin, now a monthly newsletter distributed to more than 2,000 people across the U.S. and world that focuses on the teaching of Arabic at the K-12 level. She has been a leading member of the Board of the New England Arabic Teachers Council since 2019.

From Alif to Yaa, come explore the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet in shape and sound! We will introduce the rules for how to connect and pronounce the letters of the alphabet, exploring classical calligraphy as well as contemporary art forms that grow from the foundation of this writing system that is the second-most widely used in the world (after the Latin alphabet).

One of Germany’s most time-honored traditions is embarking on an apprenticeship and becoming a Lehrling. In Waldsee's German Apprentice Program*, you'll learn German by working half-time developing a community skill auf deutsch and half-time in regular Waldsee learning groups. Waldsee apprentices live with other Waldsee participants and join in village activities, but also contribute to the Waldsee community and develop a work skill at the same time, learning from master teachers and experts in their field. Minimum registration fee $325Join us for the Japanese Arts & Media themed two-week credit program this summer. This session will not only focus on Japanese language skills, but also on various types of Japanese art ranging from traditional calligraphy and flower arrangement to modern forms of mass media like anime and film. Villagers will be encouraged to expand their creative horizons along with their linguistic ability in order to learn new skills and create art that will deepen their understanding of Japanese language and culture. This program is accessible to all language levels, but villagers ideally should have an interest in creating art along with learning about the history and scope of Japanese art. This program is the equivalent of one semester of high school credit, or one half Carnegie unit.
