About the Village

Ciao and benvenuto to Lago del Bosco, our Italian Language Village. Here, villagers of all ages can dive into the language, flavors, style and traditions of sunny Italy—all against the backdrop of the North Woods of Minnesota. From art to opera to cuisine, you’ll explore the history and culture of Italy in an immersive setting that brings language alive. Learn to dance the tarantella, make your own ravioli and star in your own opera. Stay active playing calcio (soccer) and roverino (a unique, competitive Italian ring-toss game), and test your mental prowess with scacchi (chess with large pieces). Elegant painted masks and sumptuous baroque costumes scurry around the Canals of Venice; In Viareggio, Tuscany 20' tall parade floats satirize politicians, celebrities, and the absurdities of life itself; In the northern Piedmont town of Ivrea, the tale of a poor miller's daughter defending her honor against the Lord of the Manor plays out against a backdrop of local youths pelting each other with sub-food grade oranges for the bragging rights it will confer upon their neighborhood in the year to come. What could all of this pageantry and spectacle have in common? These are just some of the ways that various Italian regions celebrate the Historic European holiday of Carnival. For one night only, you too can experience the wonders, whimsy, and downright fun of a festival that traces its roots back to the Ancient Roman Saturnalia yet still attracts millions of tourists each year to its celebrations. This one-hour, English-language workshop will explore the history and origins of these celebrations, why and how they maintain their cultural and societal relevance and ways to recreate some of the fun and traditions at home with family and friends.
