Mondays & Thursdays, 5:45-6:45. A2 På Vei Textbook - 2nd half. Continue on from the fall sessions or join for the first time with instructor Alida for this elementary Norwegian Class based on the På Vei Textbook. Elementary (A2) students will spend 12 weeks working through the second half of På Vei. På Vei is the primary Norwegian language textbook used for teaching new immigrants and students in Norway. The latest edition has beautiful pictures and graphics that will be used as a jumping-off point for discussions about language and culture. There are also updated dialogues that better reflect the people, culture and workforce in Norway. Sessions meet twice per week for 60 minutes over Zoom. Textbook required, workbook optional.

Tuesdays, 5-6. Beginning Finnish 2. Continue with instructor Tiina Watts on a Finnish cultural and linguistic journey! Our January Beginning Finnish Virtual Adult Class continues where students in the fall class left off, offering a real-time interactive small group setting for adults looking to strengthen their language skills. New students are welcome to join for the first time in January and might like to do some self-study of the textbook prior to starting. Together, the fall and January Suomen Mestari 1 classes are intended for Beginner (A1-A2) and early intermediate language learners. The emphasis of this class is on communication and increasing language proficiency through a variety of speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar activities and lessons, interspersed with songs, games, videos and stories. Students will continue in the Suomen mestari 1 (uudistettu—revised edition) textbook, which students order independently. The Suomen mestari books are a great resource with their dialogs, vocabulary lists, grammar explanations, topical discussions, as well as a wide variety of exercises. Our January Intermediate Finnish Virtual Adult Class offers a real-time interactive small group setting for adults looking to strengthen their language skills, building on what was started in the fall class. Together, these two classes are Intended for intermediate-level (B1-2) language learners. New students are welcome to start in January! Class will resume part-way through the Suomen Mestari 2 texbook. Sessions meet once per week for 60 minutes over Zoom for 12 weeks. Thursdays, 5:30-6:30. This class is a continuation of "Italian for Travelers: an Introduction." Join Lucrezia for a 12-week Beginning Italian Language Class that will cover all grammar and language functions pertinent to the A1-A2 level learner, with a focus on the communicative skills needed for your next trip to the bel paese! These 12 weeks will include: 1-hour synchronous weekly Italian Immersion Zoom meeting (English will be used in the chat), recording shared afterwards. 1-hour asynchronous self-lead language learning activities designed by the instructor with feedback provided. Participants will need a copy of Italian Now!: L'italiano d'oggi. Consider also joining our informal 6-week mixed-level Italian Conversation Hour with Lucrezia on Sundays. Winter is a beautiful time to experience Salolampi! From Friday evening to midday Monday, we have planned a weekend of Finnish crafts, music, outdoor games, interactive language classes for kids and adults, delicious food, and of course sauna. This weekend is perfect for families looking to learn more about Finnish culture, and create lasting memories in a stunning winter setting, complete with Finnish log cabins and a newly renovated grill hut on the trail between the cabins and the lakeshore sauna. Whether you're already familiar with Finnish culture and traditions or just beginning to explore them, there's something for everyone at Salolampi. Tervetuloa! (welcome) You will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Minnesota winter weather, so warm outdoor clothing is essential. Don’t forget cross-country skis or snowshoes, we have some great trails waiting for you. Guest speakers with insight into different global cultures will share their perspectives, and you'll engage in dialogue with peers about leadership, language, culture, and communication.

Where is the “Arab world”? What defines it? This workshop, led by staff from Al-Waha, the Arabic Language program at Concordia Language Villages, will give a basic overview of what we mean when we talk about the Arab world - its geography, history, and culture - and recommend resources for further learning and exploration. This workshop will be led by Lucy Lulua Thiboutot, dean of Al-Waha, Concordia's Arabic Language Village. Lulua has an M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University. She taught pre-K at the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon for two years and attended the CASA program in Damascus, Syria, studying Arabic intensively. In the United States, she has taught Arabic in New England private schools, public schools in rural Pennsylvania and in STARTALK high school summer programs in Boston. Since 2013, she has edited the Arabic Educator Bulletin, now a monthly newsletter distributed to more than 2,000 people across the U.S. and world that focuses on the teaching of Arabic at the K-12 level. She has been a leading member of the Board of the New England Arabic Teachers Council since 2019.
