Where is the “Arab world”? What defines it? This workshop, led by staff from Al-Waha, the Arabic Language program at Concordia Language Villages, will give a basic overview of what we mean when we talk about the Arab world - its geography, history, and culture - and recommend resources for further learning and exploration. This workshop will be led by Lucy Lulua Thiboutot, dean of Al-Waha, Concordia's Arabic Language Village. Lulua has an M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University. She taught pre-K at the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon for two years and attended the CASA program in Damascus, Syria, studying Arabic intensively. In the United States, she has taught Arabic in New England private schools, public schools in rural Pennsylvania and in STARTALK high school summer programs in Boston. Since 2013, she has edited the Arabic Educator Bulletin, now a monthly newsletter distributed to more than 2,000 people across the U.S. and world that focuses on the teaching of Arabic at the K-12 level. She has been a leading member of the Board of the New England Arabic Teachers Council since 2019.

From Friday evening to midday Monday, we have planned a weekend of French and francophone crafts, music, family games, outdoor activities, delicious food and fun and interactive French language lessons suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced speakers. This weekend program is perfect for families looking to learn more about French and francophone cultures, and create lasting memories in a stunning winter setting that includes cozy cabins along the shore of Turtle River Lake. Whether you're already familiar with francophone cultures and traditions or just beginning to explore them, there's something for everyone at Lac du Bois. Since you will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Minnesota winter weather, warm outdoor gear is essential. Come spend a weekend up in the north woods unter den Sternen. Join us for a weekend immersing yourself and your family in the German language and cultures of German speaking countries (mainly Germany, Austria, Switzerland). Nestled in the peaceful setting of Waldsee, just outside Bemidji, our program offers a cozy and enriching experience for families of all backgrounds. Discover Waldsee, our picturesque location on Turtle River Lake provides the perfect backdrop for winter adventures. Explore the snowy landscape through Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, winter hiking, sledding, and building snow sculptures. This 12-week workshop for language learners of all levels offers the chance to learn how to program introductory “visual novel”-style video games using the RenPy programming language. The class will primarily use English for instruction, but students will learn the Japanese needed to write simple dialogue, short character descriptions, and practice reading simple games in Japanese. Students will need access to a device or computer capable of running RenPy (check out the specs on the official website, renpy.org), but the software itself is free.
